People who live and work in buildings will always need electricians, plumbers, HVAC/R techs, and other workers who bring light, water, and comfort to their world. Right now, there aren’t enough people doing those jobs, and as they retire, there aren’t enough new people coming in. As a result, trade professionals are some of the most sought-after applicants in North America. For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says the United States needs 75,000 more electrical workers than it currently has! So if you want a job, you can find one. How many degrees can say that?

Founded in 2005, the Nexstar Legacy Foundation is dedicated to attracting talented individuals to the heating, air conditioning, plumbing, and electrical industries, by inspiring these people to discover the prestige, earning power and stability of careers in these fields. The website features some fun videos, great advice on choosing a career and frequently asked questions about the trades themselves.

Mike Rowe WORKS Foundation

One of the most visible proponents of trade careers is none other than actor, author, and television host Mike Rowe. His program “Dirty Jobs” ran on The Discovery Channel for eight seasons. In 2008, Mike created the mikeroweWORKS Foundation to launch a national PR campaign for skilled labor…more like a one-man crusade.

Student loan debt is the second highest consumer debt category in the United States with more than 44 million borrowers who collectively owe more than $1.5 trillion. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are more than 7 million jobs available across the country, the majority of which don’t require a four-year degree. The site is entertaining and clever, and it includes many resources for anyone who has questions about a future in the trades.
